From establishing a routine to purchasing a therapy doll, here are some ideas that might help both you and your mother or father who has Alzheimer's disease.
Establishing A Routine
Have you noticed that your mother or father does best when he or she is following a routine? Think about planning your day in a way that the routine can be accomplished easily. For example, you might start the day by setting clothes out that your parent will wear, knowing that you may have to assist him or her in dressing. Consider letting your parent have a set place to sit at the breakfast table. While you are at the breakfast table, think about showing your parent what day it is on the calendar, and remind him or her what your morning plan is. For instance, you could say something like, Today is the day that your friend is coming to visit you or Today is the day that we get to visit your doctor and then have lunch with Aunt Polly. Remember that nap time, or at least quiet time, can be a wonderful break for you, too.
Think Of Things That Might Soothe
It is more than likely that there will be that there are times when your parent becomes agitated or confused. Consider playing music that can distract him or her. Another idea is to buy a therapy doll. For example, your mother or father might be very comforted by just having a baby doll to hold. Perhaps doing that is reminiscent of past times that when your parent held you or your siblings. You can purchase a therapy doll that looks very much like a little baby, and that therapy doll can become your parent's favorite buddy.
